CACert.org Press Release =================================================================================== CAcert.ORG - E-mail and SSL certificates for everyone CAcert.org is a community driven, Certificate Authority that issues certificates to the public at large for free. These certificates make it possible for you to protect your Weberver with HTTPS, Signing and encoding your e-mails with s/MIME digitally to proof your identity against others. You are therefore no longer dependent on self-signed certificates. The certificates are both for private and for organizations usable and always free. Interested parties can create at http://www.CAcert.org an account; name, password and a valid electronic mail address are the only thing wich is necessary. Now the person can be verified (assured) to proof his or her Identity to others. At the "Assurance" is the presentation of at least a valid transparency-card (e.g. driver's license, The identity card or passport) necessary, this one has to be shown at the stand of "Assurers" being checked and verified. At check having been carried out gets the users' points which reflect his trustworthiness. One a trustworthy user can certificates on the CAcert web site himself points to other users exhibit and additional over a "web of trust" allocating. In comparison with other commercial suppliers there isn't any difference technically seen. Everyone puts on the X.509 Standard. Among others the great difference compared with the large, commercial suppliers is that CAcert do not delivers EV certificates (Extended Validation) and sign also OpenPGP Keys since 2003.
